Even in the Darkest Times

As clouds gather across the North American continent and darkness grows in the halls of liberty, there is hope. People are beginning to look past their differences and see the common ground we all share in society. We are one human race, and in the face of tyranny, we see it now more than ever.

Long faces assembling in public spaces spark talks on supporting each other through these trying times. The ‘Fight Oligarchy’ rallies led by US Senator Bernie Sanders and Congressperson Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are a sign of the people’s faith in each other and democratic discussion. People are listening and talking to each other again.

Socratic forums such as Town Halls and online groups are being shutdown and voices ignored as social agency lifelines are cut, yet tens of thousands are taking part in these rallies and sharing their concerns, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike. They see the power of neighbourly love past the political divide and in the hearts of each other.

When the Iron Curtain fell in Germany and the country was divided into Communist and Democratic states, friends and families were left teary-eyed for decades. Even reaching out to loved ones became a state crime that was soon followed by a rifle shot if families got too close to the ugly brick wall.

Still, they came with flowers, lit candles, and left letters that would never be read by those on the other side. They came anyway because family is greater than hate. They came because they believed in love.

When all hope is gone, we have our caring for one another. We have the faces of our friends and families and no force in the world can keep the love we have for each other down for long. People will always find a way to reunite through the darkest of times. And if there’s one thing we know about people, when it gets dark, they light a candle for others.
