World Peace Through the Eyes of a Child

I thought I’d do a quick review of a delightful video by the CBC. It highlights one young person’s thoughts on how to achieve world peace, and it’s my honour to share their thoughts here.

“This is the world,” a young girl says, pointing to a model of the Earth that fits into the palm of her tiny hand, “We live here.” And in one collective breath, the situation is clear and immediate. We have one planet, it’s precious, and we all live on it. We share a collective responsibility for nurturing Mother Earth.

Then in a burst of excitement, she exclaims: “So we should have world peace! We can get it, I promise.” Reassuring the viewer that not only is she certain that it is achievable but she knows from experience.

“But only you can do it,” she continues. She knows that it’s up to each one of us to create world peace, and that every person has to be responsible to themselves, their community, and their planet.

“Just think about it this way: if we all have one turn then why are we still fighting? My mother says fighting is not good. So we should have world peace!”

Is there anything more real than a young girl passing on the wisdom of her mother? We can see the great chain of intuitive understanding from elder to child about living one’s truth in the world. We can only imagine how remarkable her mother must be to embolden their child with such confidence, insight, and tenderness.

It is a mother’s wisdom that siblings, neighbours, communities, and countries should get along with each other. This young girl is simply reminding us of the one thing that every child comes to understand: play nice. When we are fair to each other and take our turn, we begin to understand that world peace is within our grasp and that it starts locally. It begins with peaceful living.

“Yeah, world peace! You can do it! Just think about it. I believe in you.”

Believing in each other is key to global harmony. It is the understanding that mutual support makes miracles happen for everyone in their own way and their own time. It is the idea that seeing the potential in every one of us is what makes the world a better place.

So, go ahead and create world peace—I believe in you, too. And my vegetable-growing neighbours do… oh, and the kids at the local elementary who just painted a beautiful multicultural mural, they believe in you, too… and the city you live in and the people you meet… they’re all pulling for you, everyone, and for a better world.

Think about it.
